Smriti Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 2026
Smriti for Calibre is a book reader for iPhone and iPad whose catalogue is a Calibre-Web server you host yourself. Smriti has no server or backend of its own, does not run analytics or tracking, and does not collect, sell, or share any personal data. There is no Smriti account, and nothing to sign up for.
What Smriti stores, and where
- Your Calibre-Web server address, username, and password are stored in the iOS/iPadOS Keychain, marked as synchronizable so your own iCloud Keychain can carry them to your other devices — end-to-end encrypted by Apple with a key Apple does not hold. The password is never written to iCloud Drive or to CloudKit. These credentials are sent nowhere except to the Calibre-Web server you configured.
- The books you download travel from your server to your device directly and stay on the device. Book files are never uploaded anywhere.
- The catalogue and the cover images are cached on the device so the app opens without a network connection.
- Your reading position, your highlights and notes, and your list of servers sync between your own devices through the private CloudKit database of your own Apple Account — not through any server of mine. That data lives under your iCloud account: I have no access to it and cannot read it. The server records carry the address, the display name, and the username; never the password. Reading-position sync is a switch you control in Smriti’s settings; with it off, nothing is uploaded.
- Your reading statistics (time read, streaks, books finished, reading pace) are computed and kept on the device. They are never uploaded, not even to iCloud.
Third parties
Smriti integrates no third-party analytics, advertising, attribution, or crash-reporting SDKs. Its only external code dependency is the open-source Readium toolkit, which renders EPUB files on the device and carries no tracking of its own.
There is exactly one case in which anything leaves your device for somewhere other than your own server and your own iCloud: the optional Readwise export. If, and only if, you enter your own Readwise access token and then explicitly ask to export, Smriti sends the highlights you chose to Readwise’s API on your behalf. The token is kept in the Keychain. Leave that field empty and Smriti never contacts Readwise at all.
Purchases
Smriti Pro is a one-time in-app purchase, processed by Apple. I receive no name, no email address, and no payment details — only a receipt signed by Apple, which the app verifies on the device.
Deleting everything
- Deleting the app removes the cache, the downloaded books, and the Keychain credentials.
- Anything in iCloud can be removed from Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage, choosing Smriti.
Children
Smriti is not directed to children under 13, and collects no data from anyone of any age.
