Smriti Support

Smriti for Calibre is a book reader for iPhone and iPad whose catalogue is your own Calibre-Web server. It is not a store: the app neither sells nor gives away books, and with no server to connect to it has nothing to show.

What you need

  • A Calibre-Web server reachable from the iPhone or iPad, with the OPDS catalogue enabled (in Calibre-Web: Admin → Basic Configuration → Feature Configuration → OPDS).
  • A username and password for that server.
  • The address you type into the app is the server’s. Ending it in /opds is fine, and so is leaving that off.

Getting started

  1. Open Smriti and enter the server address, the username, and the password. The password is stored in the device Keychain.
  2. Tap Connect. If the server answers, your library appears.
  3. Tap a book, then Download. When it finishes, tap Read.

Common problems

  • “Wrong username or password” — Calibre-Web rate-limits failed logins to three a minute. Wait a minute before trying again.
  • “Could not connect” — check that the server opens in Safari on the same device, on the same network or through your VPN. A TLS certificate the device does not trust will fail the connection.
  • The library opens but is empty — the OPDS catalogue is switched off in Calibre-Web, or the user you signed in as is not allowed to see books.
  • No network — the app opens anyway, with whatever it cached, and says so. Books already downloaded read in full.
  • The reading position does not follow between devices — both devices need the same Apple Account and sync switched on in Smriti’s settings. That screen always spells out what state iCloud is in.
  • Deleting a downloaded book frees the space and does not lose the page you were on.

What is free, and what is Smriti Pro

The app is free, and stays free: your server’s whole catalogue, the library and shelves with their offline cache, search, downloading books, reading offline, both reader modes (paged and continuous scroll), all the typography and theme controls, and reading-position sync between your own devices through your own iCloud.

Smriti Pro is an optional one-time purchase (no subscription, restorable, Family Sharing on) that adds:

  • Highlights and notes, synced between your devices through your own iCloud
  • Exporting annotations as Markdown, or to Readwise with your own token
  • Managing your library from the phone: uploading, editing, and deleting books on your own Calibre-Web
  • More than one library configured at a time
  • Reading statistics — time read, pace, books finished, streaks — all computed on the device

Without Pro, everything in the free list keeps working.

Privacy

Smriti has no server of its own and collects no data. See the Smriti Privacy Policy.
